Authentically Being You

Authentically Being You

The aphorism, Know thyself was more than just a catchphrase in ancient Greek society. It was held as one of the sacred Delphic Maxims and was inscribed in the temple of Apollo. The quote was also attributed to at least a dozen historical figures including Socrates, Pythagoras, Thales, and Heraclitus.

Today, we face the struggle of not just knowing ourselves, but also being ourselves in all situations. We all realize that we can’t be ourselves all of the time in all situations. If you are reserved and quiet, there are times when you need to speak up or be more assertive. Likewise, if you are an extrovert, there are times when you probably need to not say what you are thinking or pull back on the reigns. However, being authentic is more about choosing how you want to live and creating a path to that end.

Understanding Authenticity

What is authenticity and how do we become authentic in all areas of our lives? I present these three tips:

1. Know and Honor Who You Are

It’s risky being ourselves. However, you can’t be authentic if you don’t know who you are. More importantly, you can’t be authentic if you don’t honor and practice who you are. So, learn thyself and honor thyself. That is the beginning of authenticity.

2. Know and Protect Your Values

If you don’t have firm values, you are likely to float through life with no direction, no identity, and no purpose. Take some time to explore your values – spirituality, health, family, politics, hobbies, self-image. Don’t be afraid to dig deep and don’t be afraid to discover what you value.

3. Overcome the Barriers to Authenticity

Barriers to authenticity can include social or family pressures, fear, financial problems, political affiliations, career choices, or the need to fit in. Regardless of the barriers, it is possible to be authentic in all areas of your life.

Here’s to authentically being you!
